The Performance Never Ends

You got out of bed this morning and put the mask on before you even made a cup of coffee. This wasn’t a concession decision, but just a habit you have as it has become your survival instinct. Then a text comes in: " How are you? And your fingers type “good”, just busy before your brain even catches up. Because the alternative of actually saying it, letting even a sliver of it out, feels like opening a door of vulnerability that you don't know if it can close once it's open, or what the result will be of opening it.

The Exhaustion you try to hide:

The fatigue that comes from being the stable one, the person who has to hold it together. Maybe you've been this person for so long that you have lost who you are or what your needs are. It is exhausting to hide how you feel, and the people closest to you probably have no idea what you are going through.

They see the fine, that you're handling it. They see the version of you that you've spent years building out of fear of being a burden, fear that if you say what you're really going through, it will cause more issues and affect the people you care about.

Why You Can't "Tell Someone":

People say it's simple to just talk to someone and open up about what’s going on.

The issue is they probably don’t have skin in the game and aren’t thinking about what it will cost you. They don't know about the time you talked yourself down from making a poor decision or making a move you would regret out of frustration. They don't know about the thing you've been carrying for months that no one knows about. They don't know that you've opened your mouth to say it a hundred times and closed it a hundred times more.

You're not weak for struggling in silence, just human. And you're not alone in the silence; there are millions of us in it with you right now, pretending to be happy, hoping no one looks too closely, and for a way to break out of it.

A Few Things to Sit With:

- Find a way to take a break from just being “fine”.
- The people you're protecting by staying silent would most likely want the real you, over the side that is managed, by what you think they expect of you.
- Saying it out loud, even to a stranger, can start to lift the weight, even if only a little.
